Columbus

On Friday, August 22, we went to Columbus. C. and L. did baptisms; she for the women and he for the men of our ancestors. He feels great that his mother, sister and brother-in-law are baptized. I feel great that C. did my great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother. He did my grandfather and great-grandfather (that's two lines on my dad's side). We only did ten. But that is a really good start for my seven contributions. Piece by piece I'm getting connected to those who came before me and that is such a feeling of peace.

After we were through there, we went to my second cousin's place on the north side. We didn't have as much time as either of us would have liked since she had to leave for the last day of camp for foster children. She says they tug at your heartstrings in so many ways. We went through a box of old - OLD that is - portraits and snapshots she inherited from her mother and grandmother. She let me have my mother's graduation portrait; I'd never seen it before. Also some of Mom and her sisters, her brother's graduation portrait, and one my grandmother was in. I'm borrowing some twins' pictures to try and help in my search for them and in identifying what their tie is to the family; Ethel and Estle. I've seen them on a Census. I was able to help identify a few of the photos; she labeled those she knew. We were able to sort them into family groups and she seemed to enjoy the exploring as much as I. She was tickled to get a copy of the album photos I talked about earlier as well as copies of the reunion group photos since 2004 and 1986. I am planning to return to visit again. She is a good woman and I like her very much.

Then we stopped at the Ohio Historical Society. I thought I was prepared but I don't think I was very well. The place is huge! More books than anyone could glance through in a day. The room with microfilm readers had banks and banks of cabinets. I felt small in the presence of so much history and records of people gone on long before me.

Of course we stopped at our favorite restaurant, Dutch Heritage, at Exit 165 and had a good dinner from the salad/dinner bar.

It was a very good day. yeah Columbus.
