We spent Wednesday and Thursday, July 8 and 9, attending orientation for BGSU. Talk about an exhausting two days! The first day we left home early enough to arrive by 9:00 a.m. -- that was about 7-ish. There was meeting after meeting, session after session, activities, lots and lots of walking from one building to another. They fed us a buffet lunch along with video presentation and dinner with a student-presented program.
The three of us decided we were too tired to participate in the after supper activities that could go until 11 p.m. We went to our dorm room assigned for the night and chilled until we got ready for bed and turned out the lights. We chatted across the bare floor for a while; it was odd sleeping in twin beds on opposite walls -- just like college students.
Cristal went upstairs to her room she was sharing with an orientation roommate whom we had all met earlier at room check in time. The next morning we discovered that they talked, got a little acquainted, and decided to go downstairs to check out the dorm's activities. They met other students and Cris played ping pong with a boy who was pretty evenly matched as neither of them had much experience. They laughed a lot and had a good time.
The roommie had wanted a single dorm room and had been denied that opportunity. She said that if she were able to have Cristal for a roommate, she'd have no problem with sharing. That's how well they got along.
Cristal had an 8:00 a.m. appointment with a counselor to discuss her plans for college. When they finished an hour later, registration was completed and all the courses for fall semester would lead to several options for majors or degrees.
All the incoming students were assigned a book (This I Believe) to read by the time they arrived on move in day, August 22.
Roommate assignment has been made. She will be living in the other wing of the same dorm we stayed in. The girls have been e-mailing and seem to be getting along already. And costs have been taken care of. Now all we need to do is check things off the list and pack up for the big moving day.
Those of you who have lived in dorms in recent history, what sorts of things would you describe as indispensable?

1. A sense of humor and
2. Patience
no matter how well roommates get along, there are always little annoyances on both sides, so being able to forgive and forget goes a long way in dorm life.
As far as practical things go:
1. Memories of home: a stuffed animal or blanket or pictures
2. Space saving hangers or some other way to organize a lot of stuff into a little space
3. Headphones and a CD player or ipod or something to escape into classical music if you need to do homework and your roommate is chatting on her cell phone
